Twelve

“And how is everyone this beautiful morning?” Jared dropped a kiss on Harper’s cheek before slipping behind the kitchen counter island to pour himself a mug of coffee the next morning. Dinner the previous evening was a pouty affair, and one look at Zander and Harper’s faces told Jared that breakfast wasn’t going to be much better. “How are you this morning, Shawn? Did you sleep well?”

For his part, the newcomer seemed baffled more than anything else. He sat next to Zander, wearing a T-shirt and boxer shorts, and continuously shifted his gaze between Harper and Zander. “I’m good. These two haven’t blinked in more than two minutes, though. I’m starting to think they’re possessed.”

“Don’t worry about it,” Jared said, smirking. “Their eyes will dry out eventually. The only thing they’re possessed by is stubbornness.”

“Uh-huh.”

“There’re eggs and hash browns on the stove,” Zander called out. “I made enough for you, but not for Harper since she’s a big, fat stalker.”

“Don’t call me fat!” Harper snapped.

Jared moseyed over to the stove and lifted the lids off the skillets. There was more than enough for two people. He didn’t bother asking before doling out the food onto separate plates and sliding one in front of Harper as he settled at the table.

“This smells great,” Jared said, beaming.

“I said that wasn’t for her,” Zander hissed.

“She needs food because I have a big day planned for her,” Jared said. “Do you really want your best friend to starve?”

“She’s not my best friend right now. She’s the enemy.”

“You guys should put a camera in the living room and film your fights for a reality television show,” Jared suggested, reaching for the butter. “You’d be rich if you did that. Children everywhere would clap and proclaim you the hip new thing. You’d be like Gossip Girl.”

Zander and Harper rolled their eyes in unison as Shawn chuckled.

“Do you have a big day today?” Shawn asked, focusing on Jared. He figured that was his safest bet given the mood hovering over the kitchen.

“Yeah, I’m going to interview a woman who Arthur Fleming saved from a fire years ago,” Jared answered. “I’m not sure she’ll be able to give us anything, but without a cause of death we’re still operating in the dark.”

“Arthur Fleming saved a woman from a fire?” Zander finally shifted his eyes from Harper. “That doesn’t sound like him. He would be far more likely to set the fire.”

“And then pull out marshmallows and make s’mores as he watched the house burn to the ground,” Harper added.

“I know, right?” For a second Harper and Zander smiled at one another … and then they remembered their anger. Jared looked at it as a start toward making up.

“Well, I still want to talk to her,” Jared said. “There’s very little information about Arthur to be gleaned and most of the people he was friends with back in the day have passed away. Mel has been in town his entire life and he says all he can remember about
